Cost Savings Summary
New Frontier Technologies (NFT) worked with a Midstream Oil & Gas client on an extensive addition to their Aveva Enterprise SCADA system (formerly OASyS DNA). This 18-month project included designing and building all required SCADA screens used in the control room, creating database entries for over 20,000 points and conducting point-to-point check-outs for each station and block valve site.
- Between 300,000-350,000 barrels per day (MBD)
- First year EBITDA between $120MM-$145MM
- Streamlined system readiness for automation & integration upgrades to accommodate continued demands
Client Challenges
As the demand for crude oil increased, the client wanted to be able to move product from West Texas to the Gulf Coast. To cut costs, increase throughput and future-proof their midstream operations, they wanted a solution that would be the least manned and most automated pipeline system the company had ever attempted.
NFT SCADA Solution
NFT divided the project into 2 separate phases. The first phase included an accelerated schedule to meet the immediate deadlines for initial pipeline deliveries. The second phase (known as “full flow”) enabled pipeline operations at full capacity. NFT and their client completed the comprehensive SCADA system in one-and-a-half years.
SCADA Implementation: Phase 1 Details
NFT’s team of 5 SCADA specialists rapidly developed SCADA applications for sites critically required to move oil during the first phase. The development of these critical sites allowed construction on remaining stations to continue while the client met all initial delivery obligations. Once screens and data points were constructed for each site, NFT conducted the first round of check-outs with the field. During the first phase, NFT developed a procedure that allowed for check-outs to happen simultaneously while the full flow site construction continued.
SCADA Implementation: Phase 2 Details
Once the initial phase completed, NFT expanded the team to 8 SCADA automation engineers to develop the remaining sites and update the initial phase screens for full flow. Several stations received equipment upgrades and flow path changes from initial phase to full flow. NFT developed a unique and aggressive check-out plan to reduce overall downtime for multiple sites. NFT worked with the client to develop a schedule that would enable around the clock check-outs – documenting new devices and rechecking the items from the initial phase.
